Tottenham Hotspur made some solid signings in the summer to strengthen the squad for Thomas Frank to compete well in all competitions. Among all the summer signings, Joao Palhinha has arguably been the standout performer.

Palhinha has solidified Spurs’ midfield with his physicality, ball-winning prowess, experience and ground coverage. By doing so, he has become one of the first names on Thomas Frank’s teamsheet. Not only has he helped Tottenham defensively but also been impactful at the top end of the pitch, delivering six goal contributions which is extremely impressive from a No.6’s perspective.

Given his telling impact, Tottenham are planning to open formal talks with Bayern Munich to sign Palhinha on a permanent deal. However, as he is set to turn 31 in July, the Portuguese international would not be deemed as a long-term fix to the north Londoners’ problems in midfield. Perhaps keeping that in mind, Spurs are looking to bring in a younger defensive midfielder next year.

Tottenham interested in signing Club Brugge talent Aleksandar Stankovic

According to reliable Italian journalist Matteo Moretto, speaking on Fabrizio Romano’s YouTube channel, Tottenham and Newcastle United have scouted Club Brugge midfielder Aleksandar Stankovic several times this season.

Inter Milan sold Aleksandar Stankovic to Club Brugge for just €10 million in August and added a €23 million buy-back clause in the contract. The youngster has hit the ground running in Belgium, quickly becoming one of most crucial players for Club Brugge. The defensive midfielder has made 21 appearances in all competitions, netting a goal.

The 20-year-old was impressive in Club Brugge’s 3-3 draw with Barcelona in the Champions League last week, demonstrating his quality on and off the ball. Thus, it is not surprising that several clubs, including Spurs and Newcastle United, are keeping tabs on him. Inter Milan also continue to monitor Stankovic’s progress in Belgium, but if significant offers arrive from the Premier League, it will be interesting to see how the Nerazzurri react.

Stankovic could be a smart long-term acquisition for Spurs

Aleksandar, son of the legendary Inter Milan midfielder Dejan Stankovic, is not only young but would also slot perfectly into Thomas Frank’s system. Strong in the air, tough-tackling and composed on the ball, he is exactly the kind of defensive reinforcement needed as Tottenham balance Champions League football with their domestic ambitions.

Spurs would be gaining an exciting defensive midfielder with Champions League exposure, addressing their midfield problems for years to come, and at the same time hurting Newcastle’s transfer strategy to build a strong squad. This would be only possible if Inter do not exercise their buy-back clause for the two-cap Serbian international in the January transfer window.
