Opinion: Lee Dixon's latest rant about Everton's Jordan Pickford shows he has it all wrong again

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford came under scrutiny from Lee Dixon again on commentary during England vs Serbia.

It was a quiet night for the Everton goalkeeper, who kept his incredible record of clean sheets going for the Three Lions.

Pickford has now not conceded a goal for England since October last year in a staggering run of form.

The English national media praised Pickford’s display against Serbia, despite not having a great deal to do at Wembley Stadium.

Despite his critics, the Everton goalkeeper continues to silence his doubters as he maintains his spot in Thomas Tuchel’s starting XI.

David Moyes and the Everton fans will not have been impressed to hear Dixon urged Pickford to join a ‘bigger club’ last month.

The former Arsenal player continued on Thursday night with another bizarre rant about the 31-year-old Everton goalkeeper.

Darren Bent has also said Pickford is ‘too good’ for Everton in his own rant about the 31-year-old shot stopper.

Pickford had very little to do on Thursday night against Serbia, but Dixon still found a way to scrutinise his showing.

Co-commentating alongside Sam Matterface, Dixon slammed Pickford for running out to make a save just before half time.

“I’m no goalkeeper, but I wouldn’t want my goalkeeper that far out from the goal,” he said as Pickford rushed beyond his six-yard line.

Moyes has hailed Pickford’s performances this season, which just make Dixon’s criticism feel so uncalled for.

It was a dead rubber game for the Three Lions, with qualification already secured, digging out the goalkeeper felt hugely unnecessary.

After all Pickford dealt with the situation which Dixon decided to moan about as it proved his only real save of the game.

England must avoid Dixon negativity and get behind Pickford

The fact cannot be stressed enough that Pickford has not conceded a goal since 10th October 2024, with nine clean sheets kept since.

So, to openly criticise the 31-year-old – who kept a clean sheet – when he rushed out of his goal to make a save just feels incredibly out of touch.

Pickford is dreaming about lifting silverware for England, and he’s admitted he wants it more than a trophy for Everton.

Some Everton fans will understand that, some won’t, but the point is that Dixon should not be questioning a player like Pickford over something so trivial.

The Everton goalkeeper has not put a foot wrong when playing for the Three Lions and made history during the 2018 World Cup penalty shootout against Colombia.

It is about time some respect is put on his name by those in the media.
