Former Leeds United star 'shock' candidate for Middlesbrough role as Fabrizio Romano gives…

Inside Elland Road: Can Leeds Utd fans hold their nerve?

The latest news from Leeds United.

A former Leeds United striker is reportedly a ‘shock candidate’ to succeed Rob Edwards as manager of Championship promotion contenders Middlesbrough.

The former Luton Town boss opted to bring an end to his five-month spell in charge of the Riverside Stadium club when he accepted an offer to take charge of former club Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier this week. Despite Boro initially rejecting an approach for Edwards, they ‘reluctantly’ agreed a compensation package with the Premier League’s basement club before the move was formally completed on Wednesday.

That will see Edwards return to the club where he made a century of appearances during his playing career as he looks to help Wolves mount a successful battle against relegation from the Premier League - and the 42-year-old has described his return to Molineux as ‘the dream’.

He told the club website: “It means a lot. This club’s really special. It’s special anyway, but it’s special to me because it’s where I’ve spent most of my professional career and where I played most of my football. Then to have done a lot of the roles that I’ve done, I’ve got to be honest, this job was always my aim. This is the dream.

“I know the situation that we’re in right now, but this is just something that I’ve always wanted, and I’m ready for it. I’m ready for the challenge, I’m up for it, and it’s been great getting around everybody, seeing so many faces that I know, and new faces as well. The staff are all up for it and we’ll meet the players next week when everyone arrives back, and I know the lads will be as well.”

All focus now turns on who will replace Edwards at Middlesbrough and the likes of Steven Gerrard, Brendan Rodgers and former Boro boss Michael Carrick have all been suggested as possible candidates. However, reporting via his Patreon page, journalist Alan Nixon has stated former Leeds United and Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink as a ‘shock’ candidates to step into Edwards shoes and take charge of a club where he enjoyed a two-year spell during his playing career. The former Whites hitman has been out of work since leaving his role as England assistant coach last year and has not worked in the EFL since leaving Burton Albion three years ago.

Leeds United have been linked with several strikers ahead of the January transfer window - and Fabrizio Romano has given the latest update on one player suggested as a Whites target.

Transfer expert Alex Crook described Leeds are a possible candidate to land England striker Ivan Toney in the new year and hand the former Brentford man a chance to return to the Premier League following a 15-month spell with Saudi Pro League club Al Ahli. However, one key figure at Toney’s current employers has refuted claims the striker will be sold during the January transfer window.

Romano quoted Al Ahli director Rui Pedro Braz as saying: “Ivan Toney is a top player, a top striker. The rumours around his possible exit in January are NOT based on reality. It’s just not true. We’re counting on him; it makes zero sense to address this subject in November.”
