Aston Villa player out of training with national side – Defender fitness issue

Victor Lindelöf’s contract with Manchester United expired at the end of June. It had been clear for many months prior that he wouldn’t be getting a renewal.

Despite that, and having so long to find a new club, the 31-year-old was still club-less at the end of August. Indeed, he was said to be annoyed when left out of Sweden’s squad in the first week of September. Him being left out wasn’t a surprise, given he’d only signed for Aston Villa on September 1st.

Since then, the defender has played less than 200 minutes for Unai Emery’s side. His Aston Villa record looks worse when only Premier League minutes are taken into account, with him failing to total half an hour.

Graham Potter still called him up for the current international brea and named him captain, which was more of a continuation.

Aston Villa defender out of training

Sweden are set to face Switzerland on Saturday, and the Aston Villa player is now doubtful. [Fotbollskanalen](https://www.fotbollskanalen.se/sverige/vnl-missar-blagults-traning-infor-schweiz/?utm_source=twitter_fk&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=fotbollskanalen_nyheter) report Lindelöf missed training on Friday.

National team press official Petra Thorén is quoted as saying: _“There’s been a little feeling. He works with physiotherapists in the gym. You can bring any questions about his status to Graham at the press conference this afternoon.”_

Lindelöf had repeat fitness issues during his final years at Manchester United. The complete lack of a preseason won’t have helped his form or fitness in recent months.

Aston Villa will hope he can soon get up to speed, in terms of fitness and level, and prove value for the contract they’ve given him until 2027.
