Fabian Schar has made 239 appearances for Newcastle United since joining the club in 2018.

German clubs are reportedly expressing interest in Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar.

Signed by Rafa Benitez in 2018, the Swiss defender is arguably the club’s best pound-for-pound signing of the Premier League era. Schar has made 239 appearances since his £3million move from Deportivo La Coruna, initially arriving to help Newcastle maintain their top-flight status.

The 33-year-old has gone on to become a cult hero at St James’ Park, renowned for his long-range ability and flair from centre-back. He is fourth on the all-time lift of goalscoring defenders for the Magpies.

Fabian Schar’s season so far

Schar started the first four Premier League games of the season but the emergence of Malick Thiaw has relegated him to the bench. Eddie Howe reintroduced the centre-back for the Carabao Cup win over Tottenham Hotspur, where he scored and made a telling gesture in celebration.

It is understood that Schar has not been happy with being axed from the first-team picture this season. That is not to say, however, that he wants a move or the club are willing to let him go.

Sky Germany reports

Sky Deutschland claim several German clubs are considering a move for Schar this winter. As a Swiss national, the Toon favourite speaks the language and spent two years at Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim.

Newcastle would likely be unwilling to let Schar leave in the January window. He is still a crucial part of the squad and the Magpies have a busy fixture schedule.

If he were to leave, Dan Burn, Thiaw, Sven Botman and an outcast, Jamaal Lascelles, would remain as centre-back options. An exit at the end of the campaign - when Schar’s contract expires - may appear more plausible.

Fabian Schar on Newcastle United future

After scoring against Spurs, Schar left the door open for a potential contract extension. He said: "If that's something that can happen, that would be good. I would be open to it of course. We need to see what the situation is and what happens in the next few weeks.

“I will just try to show what I can do with my quality, and the rest we will see. I think I have always proved my worth since I have been here so I'm just doing my part. I was a bit unlucky with the concussion against Barcelona and being out when the team was doing well.

"We have so much quality and competition, it is not easy for the manager, I guess. But the only thing you can do is perform. I have tried to do my best today (vs Spurs). We have good strength in my position and a lot of quality. At the end of the day the gaffer needs to decide and we'll see.”
