Liverpool ready to trigger clause in veteran star’s contract; SPL move in threat

Liverpool are set to trigger the one-year extension clause in Andy Robertson’s contract, potentially delaying his Celtic move

Liverpool now face an important decision regarding Andy Robertson as the season moves into a demanding stretch, and the discussion has picked up pace because Football Insider reported new details about the left-back’s contract situation.

Robertson has entered the final months of his deal, but he has forced his way back into Arne Slot’s starting side and has started the last three matches, which changes the feel of the conversation and gives the club a reason to reassess their long-term plans.

Meanwhile, Celtic continue to track him with consistent interest, and many around the game see them as a natural destination should he leave Merseyside at the end of the campaign.

What’s the matter?

However, Football Insider’s report highlighted Keith Wyness’ view that Liverpool hold a one-year extension clause, and he suggested the club look set to use it because they value Robertson’s presence in a dressing room that has relied on his experience for almost a decade.

Liverpool are set to trigger the one-year extension clause in Andy Robertson's contract, potentially delaying his Celtic move.

The left-back is now into his ninth campaign at Liverpool, after joining from Hull City in the summer of 2017.

Moreover, this clause pushes any potential Celtic move further down the line, as Wyness projected that the Scot might not head to Glasgow until the end of the 2026-27 season. As a result, the situation now looks a bit different, and Liverpool seem prepared to keep him for another year while Celtic wait for their moment.

“I believe Liverpool have an option to extend Robertson’s contract for another year.

“I think probably even as recently as maybe two or three weeks ago, the Celtic deal might have been progressing. Now I think Liverpool realise they need him, and they need him for another season.

“They need to get this stability. They need him in the dressing room to be there as a stabilising influence. He’s a very important influence in Liverpool, from all I understand.

“I think Liverpool may well extend that extra year. After that, I would expect him to go to Celtic. And I think that would be a great move for him. He’d enjoy coming back to Scotland.

“But yes, we may see Liverpool take up that option, extend for another year because of their own problems that they’ve got, because he’s got a lot still to offer Liverpool, and I think Celtic may have to wait.”

Should the Reds trigger his one-year extension?

Robertson still brings a fierce work rate and a direct, driving style that gives Liverpool consistent momentum on the left, and his repeated bursts up the flank keep creating pockets of space that help the attack breathe, while his deliveries from wide areas have been the main source of the side’s threat for years through consistent movement and sharp decision-making.

On top of that, the Scott keeps offering defensive value through aggressive pressing and quick recovery runs, and his voice inside the dressing room still carries weight because he has delivered reliable performances across several seasons.

Even so, the 31-year-old’s attacking influence has dipped, and his crossing no longer carries the same bite, which makes his reduced output hard to ignore, and his set-piece work has slipped as well. Also, age brings its own strain, and the intensity of his role raises fair doubts about whether he can sustain that level across a long campaign.

Because of this, the Merseyside club should avoid triggering the extension, because sentimental choices rarely help a squad progress, and Milos Kerkez’s arrival signals a shift that the club must respect.
