Sandro Toanali looking forward to 'wonderful' return to Milan amid backdrop of exit rumours

· 14 November 2025, 11:30

Sandro Tonali has never been very far away from a rumour surrounding his future ever since he arrived at Newcastle United. Italian journalists are absolutely desperate to keep the Tonali return dream alive.

However, it has been made abundantly clear by the man himself lately that he's happy on Tyneside, going as far as to say he has the 'perfect' life right now.

Even his agent has once again come out this week and spoken about how there aren't any clubs in Serie A who could afford Tonali during his peak years, and that a return to Serie A will be well down the line.

This week, though, the Italian media can write about Tonali returning to the home of AC Milan without it being clickbait nonsense. The silky midfielder is part of the Italy squad, who are training at AC Milan's Milanello training ground this weekend ahead of their World Cup Qualifying Group I clash with Norway at the San Siro on Sunday.

The 25-year-old was asked how it feels to be coming back to Milan again after leaving for Newcastle, with him telling the press (via The Chronicle) that it's always emotional.

“It is emotional, the last time was almost three years ago. It is a place that is in my heart and every time I go back to Milan will be emotional for me.

"It’s not the first time, but will always feel like the second, it’s always going to be wonderful."

It's not the first time Tonali has been home since he joined Newcastle United

As Tonali says, it's not the first time he's returned since leaving, as he represented Newcastle United at the San Siro in the Champions League against his old club just months after arriving on Tyneside.

Italy beat Moldova 2-0 last night with Tonali playing the full 90 minutes, although the result was largely irrelevant as Norway had romped home to a 4-1 win over Estonia earlier in the day. That means that unless Italy can win 9-0 when the two sides meet on Sunday, Norway can't be caught by Italy.

As such, Tonali will be left on the bench to protect him against picking up a yellow card and a suspension that would keep him out of the play-off game in March.
