Mohamed Salah has now scored just two goals in his last 10 games for Liverpool, with Jamie Carragher arguing the “tactical ploy” from last season is no longer working.
Salah was given the freedom of Arne Slot‘s attack last season and it paid off with 34 goals and 23 assists in 52 games to earn him the biggest contract in Liverpool’s history.
But this time around, with a new-look forward line and a shift in system, the Egyptian has managed just five goals and three assists in 16 appearances so far, scoring twice in his last 10 games.
That has left Carragher baffled with the persistence with Salah as a guaranteed starter on the right flank – as he feels Liverpool are “getting nothing” from him.
“I think it is a tactical thing in that world-class season [last time out],” he explained on The Overlap.
“But if you’re not scoring the goals at one end and you’re leaving your team exposed at the other, you’re basically getting nothing from this tactical ploy of allowing Mo Salah just to stay up top.
“So he’s either got to come back or you’ve got to play someone else.
“That’s why I said a few weeks ago: the days of Mo Salah starting every week, especially away from home, have to stop.”
Carragher questions Slot’s “sexy” football – “he loves Pep”

Salah’s form is not the biggest issue Liverpool are facing this season, with questions growing over Slot’s tactics after a record-breaking spend in the summer transfer window.
As he continued his critique, Carragher outlined why he feels his former club have “been left behind” after attempting to mould the side in the head coach’s image – influenced by Paris Saint-Germain and Pep Guardiola.
“In Slot’s eyes, he wanted it to be more sexy, more goals, more entertaining,” he said.
“He’s always speaking about Paris Saint-Germain; he loves Pep, you heard him speak about Pep before the game, Pep’s his hero.
“So you know he’s trying to move that team to more football and more goals, and the league’s gone powerful, set-pieces, long throws – almost a throwback to the 2000s – and Liverpool have been left behind.
“They’ve almost just got it wrong in terms of where the game’s going and I think that’s been a big problem for them.”
Liverpool are currently eighth in the Premier League having won just one of their last six games, while in all competitions they have three wins from their last 10.
