Opinion: PIF may have dropped a hint about Newcastle United’s new stadium to UEFA

News of Newcastle United’s plans to build a new stadium could come in 2026, but that does not mean owners PIF will be rushing that process.

On Thursday, it was claimed that Newcastle could confirm their new stadium plans in 2026, with PIF reportedly aiming to build a new ground on Leazes Park.

Clearly, even when the news does potentially arrive, it’s going to be a process that lasts for many years.

Indeed, it seems certain that Newcastle United will remain at St James’ Park for the foreseeable future.

The iconic ground has been the club’s home for 133 years and is one of the most famous stadiums in European football. In fact, St James’ Park will be used as a venue at Euro 2028.

While not many would have expected Newcastle’s new stadium to be ready by then anyway, a new report has revealed some interesting conversations behind the scenes.

PIF tell UEFA that St James’ Park will remain untouched for years

According to iNews, the Newcastle United owners have told UEFA that St James’ will remain in its current location by the summer of 2028, which effectively ensures there will be no “spades in the ground” by that point.

In fact, the report goes on to suggest that there will unlikely be any work done on the ground until at least the end of the 2028-29 season.

Their sources reportedly believe that the idea of a new stadium being built while Euro 2028 is being played is unlikely.

It adds that there not being any movement on a new ground until halfway through 2028 is a more realistic prospect.

By telling UEFA about their plans for St James’ over the coming years, PIF have suggested even starting the process for a new stadium remains years away.

PIF proving they’re in it for the long haul at Newcastle United

This summer, PIF’s ambition at Newcastle United was questioned.

Some even suggested that Newcastle had fallen on their list of priorities. Radio silence on a potential new stadium is certainly not helpful on that front.

However, the fact that they’re thinking this far ahead surely means something. They remain committed to the cause as it is for another three years at least, while a new stadium could feasibly take the club to the next level in the years after that.

To suggest everything about PIF’s ownership of late has been brilliant would be foolish. However, they’re clearly not just letting the club linger.

The length of time involved may frustrate some but it does at least point towards the long-term thinking behind the scenes.
