FOXBOROUGH — The booming chants began before the opening kickoff.
As Drake Maye took the field during player introductions, the Gillette Stadium crowd began belting, “MVP! MVP! MVP!”
The second-year Patriots quarterback then followed with a performance that will only bolster his resume in a 27-14 win over the Jets. In front of a national audience, Maye went 25-of-34 for 281 yards and a touchdown — and those numbers could have been even better if not for a few drops from his wideouts.
The MVP chants recurred throughout the evening and picked up again when the Patriots quarterback took a knee in victory formation. After the victory, Maye was asked how he felt hearing that from his home crowd.
“Those may have been for TreVeyon (Henderson) tonight,” Maye smirked. “He scored three touchdowns.”
The quarterback then offered his real two cents.
“No, I think our fans have been great with me since I got here, since I got drafted,” Maye said. “I just appreciate them for embracing me. (I’m) trying to embrace this city and give these fans and this team and just myself — just leave it all out there and give it everything I got.
“I thought the fans were awesome. I think it was pretty sweet for the prime time game, here for my first one at home. Pretty sweet. Just glad we won.”
