Newcastle United return to Premier League action against Manchester City next week - with injury doubts over Yoane Wissa, Anthony Gordon, Tino Livramento and William Osula.

Newcastle United have suffered a few fresh injury blows in recent weeks, while a couple of long-term absentees are nearing returns.

The Magpies have lost their last two Premier League matches and sit 14th in the table, two points above the relegation zone. Next up they face Manchester City, a side they have never beaten under Eddie Howe in the Premier League.

Heading into a busy festive fixture schedule with crucial Premier League, Champions League and Carabao Cup matches, Howe will need as strong a squad as possible in the hope of turning the league form around.

Last time out at Brentford, Newcastle suffered a 3-1 defeat but also lost Nick Pope and Joelinton to injury, while Anthony Gordon, Tino Livramento and Yoane Wissa missed the game which saw Dan Burn sent off and now suspended.

Here is Newcastle United’s injury list and estimated return dates as things stand...

Nick Pope - concussion

Pope suffered a concussion during the defeat at Brentford and was forced off in the game. Concussion protocols forced the goalkeeper to withdraw from the England squad as he was given a 12-day return timeframe, which means he could be back available for the Manchester City match.

Expected return date: Manchester City (H) - 22/11

Anthony Gordon - hip

Gordon missed the Brentford trip and following international break with England after picking up a hip injury during Newcastle’s 2-0 win over Athletic Club in the Champions League.

While the injury was described as ‘minor’ by Howe, it was enough to force Gordon to withdraw from the England squad as he pushes to return in time for the Manchester City game.

Expected return date: Manchester City (H) - 22/11

Joelinton - knock

Joelinton was substituted in the first half of Sunday’s defeat to Brentford. The Brazilian had been treated by the physios a couple of times before eventually limping off the pitch to be replaced by Jacob Ramsey. His injury is not expected to keep him sidelined for too long, though.

Expected return date: Manchester City (H) - 22/11

Dan Burn - suspension

Obviously not an injury but Burn will be unavailable for Newcastle’s match against Manchester City due to suspension after picking up a red card against Brentford last time out.

He’ll be back for the Champions League trip to Marseille a few days later.

Expected return date: Marseille (A) - 25/11

William Osula - ankle

Osula had been nursing an ankle issue for several weeks before finally succumbing to the problem ahead of the Athletic Club match.

The Magpies boss then admitted the forward would need a period of rest to allow his ankle to heal.

On Osula, Howe said: “It's something that he's been feeling for a little bit, but he's been functional.

“He's been able to train and play but it was getting to the stage where it was, I think, affecting him a little bit more laterally.

“And he had a scan, we were awaiting the scan results, sort of tied in with the game. And the scan just told us to pull back a little bit, so he'll have a period of rest.

“But again, it's not a serious injury. We expect him to be weeks, not any longer.”

Expected return date: Everton (A) - 29/11

Tino Livramento - knee

Livramento has been out for almost two months with a knee injury picked up against Arsenal back in September. The 23-year-old has been back on the grass and will be looking to be back shortly after the international break.

Expected return date: Everton (A) - 29/11

Yoane Wissa - knee

Wissa joined Newcastle from Brentford for £55million on transfer deadline day before picking up a knee injury while on international duty with DR Congo days later.

The forward is yet to make his debut for Newcastle due to his injury but is back on the grass and pushing to return to full first-team training. Though his actual return to playing date is uncertain at the moment.

Expected return date: TBC (Early December)
