Paquetá Breaks Silence as Flamengo Plot Emotional Return

Lucas Paquetá has opened up in today’s Daily Mail, with the Brazilian midfielder discussing his struggles during the betting scandal that derailed his career and dream move to Manchester City. He shared emotional reflections on how the ordeal affected both him and his family.

Flamengo have long been keen to bring back Paquetá, who rose through their academy and made over 90 senior appearances before moving to AC Milan in 2019. After spells at Lyon and currently West Ham, Paquetá has been persistently linked with a move away from the London Stadium.

A number of reports suggest West Ham are prepared to negotiate his departure, with claims that a £26.5 million deal is close to completion — paving the way for an emotional homecoming. Flamengo’s technical director José Boto is reportedly in regular contact with the player’s representatives, determined to make the reunion a reality.

However, Claret & Hugh understands that while West Ham are resigned to losing the player this summer they value him much higher, closer to £60 million. With a contract running until June 2027, and an option for a further year, the club are in no mood to accept low-ball offers.

In his Daily Mail interview, Paquetá broke his silence on the scandal that nearly ended his Premier League journey. He revealed how close he came to joining Manchester City before the investigation halted the move:

“Without a doubt, it was a very difficult time, not only for me but for my family. My wife and I went through two long, painful years.”

Now cleared of the most serious charges, Paquetá says he feels “lighter” and ready to “tell everyone my side of the story.”

For now, he remains a West Ham player on a reported salary of £150k a week. But with PSR (Profit & Sustainability Rules) still looming over the club, West Ham will be determined to maximise any sale and won’t allow the Brazilian international to leave on the cheap
