Several Wolverhampton Wanderers stars are in action over the international break

For Premier League bottom club Wolverhampton Wanderers, this international break came at a good time as new head coach Rob Edwards returns to the club he once represented as a player.

The former Middlesbrough boss officially departed the Riverside for Molineux on Wednesday and will welcome the international break to get reaccustomed to his surroundings, getting some extra time to plan a way forward with his staff and work with the squad players not away on international duty.

Several Wolves stars are currently away with their national sides, as their respective World Cup qualification campaigns heat up with just seven months until the tournament kicks off next summer.

Jorgen Strand Larsen benched as Norway thrash Estonia

Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen found himself on the substitutes’ bench as his native Norway overcame Estonia 4-1 in their World Cup qualifier on Thursday, as they closed in on qualification for the finals.

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland inevitably scored twice, while strike partner Alexander Sorloth of Atletico Madrid also bagged a brace. With the Norwegian side boasting such an elite range of striking talent, Wanderers man Strand Larsen was forced to watch from the substitutes’ bench and did not get onto the field on the night.

Strand Larsen was not the only Wolves star in attendance at Ullevaal Stadion, as left-back David Moller Wolfe started and bagged an assist for Haaland to score Norway’s fourth of the night, with all four goals coming in 12 second-half minutes. The former AZ Alkmaar left-back signed for Wolves in the summer and has started the last nine matches for his country.

Tolu Arokodare makes late entrance as Nigeria secure play-off victory

Meanwhile, Tolu Arokodare was an 116th-minute substitute as Nigeria beat Gabon 4-1 to keep alive their hopes of qualifying for the World Cup with a play-off victory.

Nigeria finished second in their qualifying group and missed out on automatic qualification as a result but finished with enough points to secure a play-off spot. Four CAF teams enter a continental play-off with a semi-final and then final. The winner of the final will then play an inter-continental play-off to earn a spot at the World Cup.

DR Congo lie in wait for Nigeria, having beaten Cameroon thanks to a dramatic 91st minute winner by former Newcastle United defender Chancel Mbemba.

Arokodare replaced Nigerian talisman Victor Osimhen, who had scored twice in extra time to send his side to victory after Gabon had initially equalised in the 89th minute. The 25-year-old Arokodare has earnt eight Nigeria caps and scored two goals since his debut in March 2025, and will hope to compete at the World Cup next summer if Nigeria are victorious in their play-off campaign.

Wolves are back in Premier League action with a home match against Crystal Palace on November 22, which will be Edwards’ first match in the hot-seat.
