Nottingham Forest boss Sean Dyche says he tries to give young players “crazy money” advice.
But he candidly admits if he had earned huge sums of cash as a player in his twenties he would have been “a right berk”.
Dyche has revealed his first trainee wage at Forest was £28.50 a week which went up to £35 a week in his second year. He was paid £160 a week in his first year as a professional in 1990, which is a world away from the wages for many young Premier League players today.
Speaking to The Times, Dyche said “I work with a lot of young players who are suddenly earning crazy money, and I try to offer them advice, but that’s not always possible with their families or advisers or agents about.
“I try to say to them, “Slow yourself down”, but if I’m totally honest, if I earned the money some of them are earning when I was 20 I’d have been a right berk.
“I’m not going to stop them from being a little bit outlandish because I think that’s human nature.
“But you need to take stock when you get to a point where you’re no longer representing your own life. That’s when they need a bit of education.”
