MLB Report: Dodgers Will Pursue Rays Pitcher Over Others, Executives Say

The Los Angeles Dodgers are looking to improve their bullpen this offseason, and it sounds like Tampa Bay Rays reliever Pete Fairbanks might be at the top of their list of targets. USA Today‘s MLB insider Bob Nightengale was in Las Vegas for the annual MLB GM Meetings, and he heard from executives that the Dodgers are expected to pursue Fairbanks over other, bigger names on the reliever market. “They could pursue Edwin Diaz or Devin Williams, but rival executives expect them to instead turn to former Tampa Bay Rays closer Pete Fairbanks, who has 75 saves with a 2.98 ERA the past three seasons,” Nightengale wrote. Fairbanks, 31, flies under the radar among the game’s top relievers, mostly because he’s never made an All-Star team. But it’s clear that contenders are aware of his talent. Fairbanks’ movement this winter should have an impact on the American League East, one way or another. The Toronto Blue Jays are reportedly among the teams monitoring him. One interesting detail about Fairbanks is that he has Raynaud’s Syndrome, which effects his grip on the ball in cold weather. This has people thinking that Fairbanks will sign with a west coast team. There have been reports that Dodgers GM Brandon Gomes isn’t over the moon about the idea of spending big an another reliever this offseason, mostly because he’s done so a lot recently with Tanner Scott and Blake Treinen, and it has yielded mixed results. Scott wasn’t a factor in LA’s championship run this season, and the Dodgers ended up relying heavily on Roki Sasaki in a closer role towards the end of the season and the playoffs. Story continues below advertisement LA has enough quality arms in their organization. It makes sense for Gomes to avoid the most expensive relievers on the market and opt instead for a guy like Fairbanks, who won’t be cheap but doesn’t come with the glitz and glamour attached to a Diaz or a Williams. That doesn’t mean he won’t be just as productive, or more so.
