Broncos get Sherfield back but J.K. Dobbins remains sidelined

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Broncos wide receiver Trent Sherfield returned to practice Thursday afternoon, one day after sitting out due to a toe injury.

The veteran rotational receiver and special-teams contributor was the only one of the six players who missed Wednesday’s on-field work seen taking repetitions at the beginning of Thursday’s session.

Sherfield returned to a wide-receiver room that became more crowded this week thanks to the return of Lil’Jordan Humphrey, whom the Broncos plucked from the New York Giants’ practice squad Wednesday. Humphrey was in uniform for Thursday’s work, wearing the No. 17 jersey he brandished during the 2023 and 2024 seasons he played for the Broncos prior to his free-agency departure in the spring.

BRONCOS SEE ADKINS TAKE A STEP FORWARD

Tight end Nate Adkins, who has not played or practiced since injuring his knee in the fourth quarter Oct. 26 against the Dallas Cowboys, took part in pre-picedractice stretching Thursday, but jogged over to to a side field when the Broncos began their individual-period work.

Running back J.K. Dobbins, edge rusher Jonah Elliss, inside linebacker Alex Singleton and cornerback Pat Surtain II did not practice once again.

Dobbins is dealing with a foot injury, with evaluation ongoing to determine the length of his absence and whether he will land on injured reserve. Broncos coach Sean Payton said Wednesday that No. 2 running back RJ Harvey will “obviously” have “more opportunities” this coming Sunday; he has had more than eight touches in a game just once in the previous 10 weeks this season.

Surtain has not practiced since straining his pectoral muscle in the second quarter of the win over Dallas. Elliss suffered a hamstring injury last Thursday. Singleton is recuperating from surgery following his testicular-cancer diagnosis.

Inside linebacker Garret Wallow practiced for a second-consecutive day. The Broncos started the 21-day clock on his return from injured reserve Wednesday.

Defensive end John Franklin-Myers was at practice, but was seen without a helmet watching his fellow defensive linemen go about their paces during the individual period of work.
