Real Madrid set to face competition from Barcelona, Newcastle for 19-year-old starlet

Ferland Mendy finds himself at one of the most delicate moments of his Real Madrid career, with the defender now facing an uphill task to convince new manager Xabi Alonso that he deserves a meaningful role in the squad.

After spending close to six months on the sidelines due to injury, his return comes at a time when competition at left-back has intensified, and the scenario around him has changed drastically.

The arrival of Alvaro Carreras in the summer has pushed Mendy further down the pecking order, while Fran Garcia continues to offer reliability and energy on the flank.

Alonso’s message to Mendy

Now, according to reports from Defensa Central, Alonso has already held a direct conversation with Mendy, making it clear that he does not see the Frenchman as a starter at present.

The only reassurance offered was that he would be considered in emergency situations, particularly because of his ability to fill in as a left-footed centre-back when needed.

This marks a steep decline from Mendy’s previous status. Once an undisputed starter under Carlo Ancelotti, he is not even a rotational piece under Alonso.

With Carreras and Garcia ahead of him at left-back, and the defensive line bolstered by players like Dean Huijsen, Eder Militao, Raul Asensio, David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger, the opportunities for Mendy will be extremely scarce.

Real Madrid open to departure

It is to be noted that, despite recently agreeing to an extension with Real Madrid, the club is already said to be regretting the decision.

Their intention is to explore a potential sale in one of the upcoming transfer windows.

As such, the 30-year-old is entering the final stretch of his prime and understandably wants regular playing time.

Yet at Madrid, he now faces the prospect of being not only a backup, but the third-choice left-back.

As things stand, his future looks increasingly uncertain, and unless circumstances change dramatically, Mendy may soon be forced to consider a move away from the Santiago Bernabeu.
