Former Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Ben Sauls has signed with the New York Giants. That comes after starting kicker Graham Gano suffered a neck injury. Sauls tried out with the Giants a week ago before inking the deal.
Sauls later inked a deal with the Atlanta Falcons and joined their practice squad but never ended up playing a game before being released.
Sauls had an impressive preseason with the team. He went 4 of 4, including two kicks from 49 and 50 yards, respectively, against the Panthers in the team’s final preseason game. His efforts were so impressive that head coach Mike Tomlin gave him a shoutout in his postgame press conference, understanding that Sauls might have just earned himself a job elsewhere.
“Really happy for Ben Sauls, the work he was able to show us tonight, man. Good for him,” Tomlin said of the kicker.
A left-booted kicker, Sauls was the Pittsburgh Panthers’ kicker for the last four seasons and helped lead them to two ranked finishes during his time with the program.
He set program records for longest-made kick with a 57-yarder and 68-yarder this past season. Sauls has shown an aptitude for having an elite NFL range.
Over his career, Sauls was an excellent kicker for the Panthers. He went 52 of 64 over his career with a career-long of 59 yards. Meanwhile, he was 122 of 124 over his tenure on extra points. He went five of six in the preseason and was perfect on extra points.
