Nuno Espirito Santo has axed James Ward-Prowse from his West Ham squad since taking over as manager.
Everton manager David Moyes could look to reunite with one of his former West Ham players in January with the London outfit open to the exit of midfielder James Ward-Prowse.
The former Southampton man looked as if he would have a big role to play this campaign under Graham Potter. Ward-Prowse had fallen out of favour under Julen Lopetegui but was one of Potter’s first picks in the starting XI, featuring in all of the first five Premier League matches this season.
However, since then, Ward-Prowse has failed to make a matchday squad under Nuno Espirito Santo. The head coach has been ruthless in dropping the playmaker in a decision that mirrors a similar choice while the two were at Nottingham Forest.
Nuno Espirito Santo axes West Ham midfielder from squad
Speaking in September, having just taken on the job, Nuno said: “It’s a tough decision but I make decisions looking to the best options for the game. James is not involved, we had a chat, I think he understands it.”
With the 31-year-old surplus to requirements, West Ham are expected to sanction a move away from the club in January to make space for desperately needed arrivals. Ward-Prowse has 409 appearances of Premier League experience and could have suitors in Everton.
That’s according to the trusted ExWHUEmployee, who said: “Although Ward-Prowse has been pretty much banished from the first team since Nuno arrived, there has been no fallout between the pair. Nuno wants pace and energy in his midfield and Ward-Prowse just doesn’t fit that profile. Which means he is highly likely at this stage to leave in the new year.
“His former club Southampton where he was captain are prepared to take him back. We also understand that David Moyes has shown interest in possibly taking him up to Everton.”
Everton boss David Moyes eyes Ward-Prowse reunion
Moyes was in charge at West Ham when Ward-Prowse was signed from Southampton on a £30 million transfer in 2023. The Toffees boss regularly spoke highly of what the midfielder brought to his side.
The manager hailed Ward-Prowse as ‘world class’ as set piece deliveries and spoke of his quality when the player first signed at the London Stadium. He said: “I’m delighted to bring a player of James’ quality and experience to West Ham United.
“He's performed to a very high level in the Premier League over the last decade, constantly producing good numbers season after season. His leadership qualities are obviously another huge plus for us – he’ll be a big voice for us, someone who drives the team on from the middle of the pitch.”
