Is John Mousinho under pressure at Pompey?
Fifteen years on from his Pompey arrival the former Fratton boss is delivering results in the EFL.
Former Pompey boss Steve Cotterill has been recognised for his excellent start to life as Cheltenham Town manager, winning October’s League Two Manager of the Month award.
Cotterill making immediate impact in League Two
But Cotterill was able to inspire an immediate turnaround, with Cheltenham winning three and drawing one of their four League Two matches in October to claim 10 points. Even after a 2-1 defeat against promotion-chasing Notts County at the start of November, Town are 22nd in League Two, just outside the relegation zone.
Ex-manager and chair of the Championship Manager of the Month judging panel, Danny Wilson, said in a statement: “Considering the league position Cheltenham found themselves in at the end of September, Steve agreed to take the reins and has rejuvenated his squad.10 points from four games is a fantastic return taking all things into consideration, and three points from top of the league Walsall, just to add to their newfound confidence.”
Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman added: “Cheltenham’s turnaround under Steve Cotterill has been remarkable. He took over the club when they were rock-bottom of League Two, and despite picking up 10 points, they still find themselves on the edge of the relegation zone.
“This turn in form will give confidence to everyone around Cheltenham, and with such a long way to go and with Cotterill at the helm, you’d back them to be ok and progress up the table.”
What has Steve Cotterill said about his award?
Accepting the award, Cotterill paid tribute to the efforts of his staff and players, calling on everyone at Cheltenham Town to ‘keep going’ as they seek to avoid relegation out of the Football League for the first time since 2016.
“It’s been a really good month and I couldn’t have done it without the staff, players and supporters. It’s been a real collective effort,” he said.
“I’m the one lucky enough to get the personal accolade ahead of some other managers who have had a good month as well, but this is more about the collective here.
“It has been a huge effort by everyone, and I don’t envisage that changing. “Now we’ve got to keep going, keep everybody upbeat and build on those recent performances.”
Cheltenham will look to recover from their loss against Notts County when they travel to 18th-place Tranmere Rovers on Saturday.
How did Steve Cotterill perform as Portsmouth manager?
Cotterill took charge of 61 games as Portsmouth manager between June 2010 and October 2011.
However, he managed to win just 18 of those matches at a rate of 29.51%, which is the third-lowest he’s endured across the 12 managerial stints he’s had so far.
He eventually departed to replace Steve McLaren as Nottingham Forest manager in October 2011.
