Troy Deeney shares his ‘totally honest’ verdict on Wolves hiring Rob Edwards as their new…

Since Wolves announced the appointment of Rob Edwards, no one has been shy of giving their take on the hire — and now it’s Troy Deeney’s turn.

Maybe it’s the lull of the international break, but Wolves seems to be the topic of conversation on everyone’s lips after changing managers.

Some have praised the decision to bring in Edwards, but others are less convinced.

Tim Sherwood commended Edwards for taking the leap. Wayne Rooney and Alan Shearer sympathise with Middlesbrough fans, who have been the losers of the situation.

And now Deeney has given his two-pence, and it’s not what Wolves fans will want to hear.

Troy Deeney concerned about the Rob Edwards appointment

Deeney is familiar with Edwards, having both held the position of manager at Forest Green Rovers. Edwards guided them to promotion in 2022, while Deeney had a short-lived stint as player/coach in 2023.

He isn’t convinced by the appointment, though.

Discussing Edwards on talkSPORT, Deeney says: “I’ll be totally honest. I like Rob. I’ve got a lot of time for him. I think it’s a crazy decision. I really do.

“I can’t comprehend why Wolves, other than the emotional attachment of obviously, Rob was there before, has a connection with the fans obviously closer to home. But I don’t understand why Wolves would say this is the person to keep us up and or bring us back up.”

No holding back from the former striker, who thinks a different profile of manager — maybe one with more experience — should have been brought to Molineux.

But it’s not totally fair on Edwards. Wolves had a preference for a younger coach, and the 42-year-old fit the bill.

From sifting though hours of reactions and hot takes, the overarching feeling is not that this was a perfect appointment.

The way Edwards left Middlesbrough didn’t sit right with many, who questioned whether it really is a step up with Wolves given a 90% chance of relegation by Opta.

Are you confident Rob Edwards will help Wolves avoid relegation?

But from what we have seen from the new boss since Wednesday’s announcement has been nothing but enthusiasm about this new opportunity.

At the end of the day, everyone will have an opinion. But until Wolves take to the pitch again, there’s no way of judging whether Edwards was the right choice. Let’s see what he can do on the sideline first.
