Steelers Sign RB Trey Sermon To Practice Squad

Just two days after he was waived by the Pittsburgh Steelers, RB Trey Sermon is returning to the team. The Steelers signed Sermon to their practice squad on Friday, the team announced.

The Steelers had an opening on the practice squad after WR Isaiah Hodgins was signed by the New York Giants on Thursday. Sermon cleared waivers yesterday, and now he’s back with Pittsburgh.

Sermon was signed to the Steelers’ active roster ahead of their Week 9 game against the Indianapolis Colts, but he was waived with the team needing to make room for QB Will Howard, who was activated off IR on Wednesday.

Sermon didn’t take a carry in his four games with the Steelers, but he returned two kicks for 51 yards and had a tackle on special teams. He played 47 special teams snaps but didn’t register an offensive snap with the Steelers.

The Steelers originally signed Sermon after a successful tryout at the team’s rookie minicamp. He opened the season on the practice squad but was elevated in Weeks 3 and 4 before being signed to the active roster. Sermon was a third-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers, but spent just one year with the 49ers before being traded to the Philadelphia Eagles. He’s also spent time with the Colts.

In his career, Sermon has 134 carries for 505 yards and three touchdowns, while adding 22 receptions for 138 yards through the air. With Sermon back on the practice squad, the Steelers now have two running backs on the practice squad with him and Lew Nichols. Max Hurleman is also listed as a running back on the team’s website, although he primarily played wide receiver in training camp and the preseason.
