Enquiries already made for Newcastle star who has played 163 times under Eddie Howe - journalist

Fabian Schar’s future at Newcastle United is suddenly under an element of doubt ahead of the January transfer window.

While the defender’s deal is set to expire at the end of the season, Schar has confirmed he would be open to a new contract at Newcastle United.

Schar has long been a key player under Eddie Howe at Newcastle but the arrival of Malick Thiaw, coupled with the form of Sven Botman (until recently), has pushed him down the pecking order somewhat.

The 33-year-old has made only one start since suffering a head injury in October and while he remains a key part of the Newcastle United squad, it’s clear that Thiaw and Botman are currently the first choice options.

Now, a perhaps concerning update on his future has emerged.

Fabian Schar could leave Newcastle United in January

According to German football expert Florian Plettenberg, a “winter exit” for Schar is now on the cards at St James’ Park.

Plettenberg suggests a contract extension is unlikely for Schar and that clubs in the Bundesliga have already made enquiries.

Schar has previously played in Germany, during a two-year stint at Hoffenheim between 2015 and 2017.

Fabian Schar leaving would be a major blow for Newcastle United

Newcastle have certainly shown a willingness to keep older players, with Callum Wilson someone the club wanted to keep before he decided to depart.

Indeed, Newcastle are willing to hand Schar a new contract and he has previously suggested he’s open to it, so it’s unclear as to why a winter exit is suddenly possible.

Schar’s experience, as well as his enduring class, is vital for Newcastle. The defender has played 163 times under Howe and remains capable of performing at the highest level.

It would be gutting to lose a player of that quality, even if he is only a back-up option.

Newcastle would have to break the bank to sign a player of his quality. Keeping him has to be a priority.
