Wolves have the chance to shake-up their squad in the upcoming January transfer window

Wolves boss Rob Edwards will have the chance to put his own stamp on his newly inherited squad in the January transfer window. He will also have the opportunity to let some players head out the exit door if needed to free up space and funds. The ex-Watford and Luton Town man has been picked as their replacement for Vitor Pereira.

Edwards has left his position with Middlesbrough in the Championship to take over at Molineux. The Midlands outfit are bottom of the Premier League table. They are winless in their first 11 fixtures and are inside the drop zone with West Ham and Nottingham Forest, eight points from safety behind Burnley in 17th.

Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes eyed by Manchester United

Gomes, 24, moved to England back in 2023 and has since adapted well. Prior to his switch, he rose up through the academy at Flamengo and broke into their first-team as a youngster before leaving South America. Ruben Amorim is in the hunt for some midfield reinforcements and could see him as an ideal candidate.

The Brazil international, who has 10 caps to his name, has made 98 appearances for Wolves in all competitions, nine of which have come this season, and he has chipped in with seven goals. He injects quality into their starting XI and they won’t want to lose him, especially mid-way through a campaign to a team in the same division like United. However, their hands may be tied in the future, especially if they are eventually relegated down to the Championship.

Wolves should ask for Manchester United swap deal

Wolves should ask Manchester United for a player in return if they swoop in for Gomes. Striker Joshua Zirkzee has fallen out of favour at Old Trafford. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him leave for a change of scene.

The attacker wouldn’t be a bad option for Edwards to call upon. He would give him another player to pick from at the top end of the pitch and some competition for Jorgen Strand Larsen. In addition, he has struggled to make an impact with the Red Devils and will feel that he has a point to prove.

Zirkzee, 24, has played six times for Holland so far in his career and scored 14 goals in 58 games for Bologna before United came calling. His time with Amorim’s side has turned stale and he needs to build his confidence back up again. He has also had spells in the past at Bayern Munich and Anderlecht, among others.

Wolves would be able to offer him regular minutes which is what he needs at this stage. They have lacked goals this term and need to add more firepower to their ranks. The Mirror claim Everton and West Ham are interested in Zirkzee, along with Roma, Juventus and PSV Eindhoven which shows he is still highly regarded in the game.
