ALLEN PARK -- Amik Robertson popped up on the injury report with a hamstring injury on Thursday, and Terrion Arnold continues to work through concussion protocol.
Despite veteran cornerback DJ Reed returning to practice this week, the Detroit Lions are not rushing him back to action to fill any void in the secondary.
Dan Campbell has targeted early December for Reed’s return to game action. And while it could come earlier than that, the Lions coach isn’t about to risk his top cornerback’s recovery from a hamstring injury to fill short-term holes.
“Well, I don’t see DJ yet,” Campbell said Friday. “I love where he’s at, man. He’s getting better.”
Reed’s return is a major re-addition coming for Detroit’s defense down the line.
Reed posted one interception, recovered one fumble and added 16 tackles in his four games played. Pro Football Focus ranks Reed 20th among cornerbacks with enough snaps to qualify. He is graded as the fourth-best run defender at his position, something the Lions absolutely love about him. Reed has allowed only 11 receptions on 18 targets and no touchdowns in coverage.
When quarterbacks threw Reed’s way in those four games, he allowed a passer rating of 61.3 in coverage, the seventh-best mark among starting cornerbacks.
Campbell said he hopes to get Robertson moving around some at practice on Friday. The veteran was limited at Thursday’s session, but a mid-week hamstring injury isn’t usually a good omen.
Robertson has once again boosted the team’s secondary with his ability to move from nickelback to a starting outside cornerback role. Reed has been on injured reserve since Week 4. Arnold has exited five of the seven games he’s played this season, missing two due to a shoulder injury.
Arnold is not expected to practice on Friday. But Campbell didn’t immediately close the door on his status for this weekend.
The Lions coach said he would have a better idea on Robertson and Arnold after Friday’s practice. All-Pro safety Kerby Joseph (knee) has also not practiced this week. There has not been much movement on his knee injury that the Lions hoped would be better coming out of the bye a couple of weeks ago.
