Sky Sports: £92,000-a-week Newcastle star opens talks to leave club in January

Newcastle United star Fabian Schar is likely to leave St James’ Park in 2026, with Bundesliga clubs eyeing a move for the Swiss defender, according to Sky Germany.

The 33-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the campaign and clubs in Germany are believed to be already in discussions over bringing Schar back to the Bundesliga.

The central defender has made just four starts in the Premier League this season and has dropped down Eddie Howe’s pecking order following Malick Thiaw’s summer arrival from AC Milan.

Sky Germany claim Schar’s time at Newcastle now ‘appears to be drawing to a close’, with a summer departure seeming likely for the Switzerland international.

A winter transfer is also seen as a possibility, with ‘talks already underway’ regarding the 33-year-old’s return to the Bundesliga, where he played for Hoffenheim before joining the Magpies in 2018.

Schar and Burn

Schar, who arrived at St James’ Park from Deportivo La Coruna, has been an instrumental part of the Magpies’ backline ever since, making 239 appearances and scoring 22 goals in all competitions.

He started in Newcastle’s first four games of the 2025/26 campaign before a head injury ruled him out of the following two.

Since then, the £92,000-a-week Swiss defender has only played 75 minutes of Premier League football and was left on the bench for Newcastle’s 3-1 loss to Brentford last weekend.

Howe has placed trust in Thiaw and Sven Botman’s partnership this term, while both Schar and Jamaal Lascelles are third and fourth-choice options.

Both central defenders’ contracts are expiring at the end of the season and it remains to be seen whether Newcastle will engage in talks over an extension.

Lascelles has played just 19 minutes of Premier League football this term, with his last top-flight start coming in the 3-0 win over Fulham in December 2023.

Newcastle have endured a disappointing start to the Premier League season under Howe, winning just three of their 11 games.

Scoring has been an issue for the St James’ Park side, with only 11 goals netted – the 17th-worst return in the division.

Sitting 14th in the table going into November’s international break, the Magpies return to action against Manchester City next Saturday, 22 November.
