Wolverhampton Wanderers might have overseas competition for a January target

Premier League bottom club Wolverhampton Wanderers have the opportunity for a fresh start under Rob Edwards after the former Middlesbrough boss secured his return to Molineux on Wednesday.

Edwards will have an almighty task on his hands if the Old Gold are to survive relegation, as the West Midlands outfit picked up zero wins and just two points in 11 games under previous boss Vitor Pereira to sit uncomfortably in last place in the division, already eight points away from safety.

The club have decided that former player Edwards, who famously got Luton Town promoted to the Premier League for the first time, is the right man to take Wanderers into their next chapter.

The German club are currently 14th in the Bundesliga and are in need of January reinforcements themselves, as they look to drag themselves away from relegation danger. They have reportedly identified 32-year-old Fullkrug and Brentford centre-back Kristoffer Ajer as two targets in which they are ‘interested’. They previously had a £13m bid for the latter rejected in the summer.

Sky Sports’ report continues that there is a ‘growing possibility Fullkrug could leave’ the Hammers during the January window. Wolves and Fulham have also been touted as possible destinations.

‘I’m hearing’ - Wolves interest in Fullkrug

Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness told Football Insider that Wolves might hold an interest in bringing Fullkrug to Molineux, in reports revealed recently.

“I heard a whisper the other day that either Wolves or Fulham might be interested in taking Fullkrug. I’m hearing Wolves might be one club who are interested in taking him on and giving him a chance to do something and stay in the Premier League,” said Wyness.

“Look, I know there’ll be interest for him back in Germany. He did very well there, and players often don’t settle in the Premier League for whatever reason. He hasn’t and there’s been injuries as well. I think he will be gone in January, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he stays in the Premier League.”

Whether the signing of Fullkrug, who is currently injured and has yet to feature under Nuno Espirito Santo at West Ham, would necessarily move the needle for Wolves can be questioned.

But his experience in both club and international football is undeniable and he could provide increased competition to the Wolves attack, particularly amidst rumours that Jorgen Strand Larsen could depart in the winter - though Wolves fans will hope an exit does not come to fruition. It will make intriguing viewing to see who will lead the line for Wanderers come February.
