Newcastle United dealt major blow in pursuit of Premier League star backed for England debut

· 14 November 2025, 20:30

There has been a rumour doing the rounds for a while that Newcastle United have an interest in highly-rated Everton midfielder James Garner.

The rumours appeared in February that Newcastle would be looking at the former Manchester United academy star in the summer, but when the off-season rolled around, Newcastle ultimately ended up looking elsewhere.

Eddie Howe brought in Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa for £40 million, a deal believed by many to be an absolute steal.

However, Ramsey has already spent time on the sidelines through injury, something that was highlighted as a red flag when he joined, so there could yet be scope for the Magpies to return to the market for another midfielder.

James Garner is being touted for an England nod

Newcastle have an interest in Everton's James Garner

While Newcastle have been linked with a few young midfielders to be brought in as project players recently, a rumour regarding an interest in James Garner has resurfaced, and it would be expected that if such a move were likely to happen, the 24-year-old would be expecting to be in the first team at Newcastle straight away.

Indeed, Garner is one of the first names on the Everton team sheet these days, and there's even been talk of him being close to an England call-up, so for him to move to Newcastle, he'd be demanding more than just a place on the bench, which does cast this transfer into doubt.

Garner's Everton contract is due to expire in the summer, but The Athletic has revealed that the club has an option to extend by another 12 months, and given that David Moyes is a huge fan of Garner, and the player himself is enjoying himself at the Toffees, that extension seems almost inevitable.

A move for James Garner doesn't make sense for Newcastle as things stand

Therefore, we don't see this one really going anywhere. If Newcastle were truly interested in Garner, they would likely have to break the bank to sign him and make him all kinds of promises they likely can't keep.

Garner is a defensive midfielder who is most comfortable on the right, which is where Toon captain Bruno Guimaraes operates. If Garner were to oust anyone from our three-man midfield, it would more likely be Joelinton, but he occupies the left-sided slot of the trio, and Ramsey is already battling for that spot.

It's a nice idea bringing in another young English prospect, but we honestly just can't make the logic of this one work, and the addition of an extra 12 months on his contract makes it even more unlikely.
