CLEVELAND, Ohio — Browns legend Bernie Kosar provided an update Friday morning in an interview with Channel 19.
Kosar mentioned receiving another procedure and how it came with difficulty in stopping the bleeding, but he’s trying to stay positive and share his journey.
“I’ve been trying to be a little transparent and show people the ramifications on taking your health serious,” Kosar said. “I almost feel like this is my responsibility and I’ve kind of been put on Earth to do it.”
Kosar then spoke of feeling anxiety throughout the last couple days, but noted inspiration from a quote said by Hall of Fame coach Jimmy Johnson, who led the Cowboys to two Super Bowl titles.
“In the words of Jimmy Johnson, ‘somehow, someway,’ he used to always figure out a way to win the game,” Kosar said. “Somehow, someway, I really feel like I’ve figured out a way to stay alive and keep my brain in it.”
This all dates back to Wednesday, when Kosar announced he was scheduled to receive a liver transplant last weekend, before it was held off due to the donor organ being infected.
Kosar asked for prayers after undergoing “two aggressive procedures” to stop internal bleeding as he awaited a liver transplant that had been delayed.
He then underwent the two procedures and was set for a third procedure.
“I could really use your love, support and actual prayers today,” Kosar said on Wednesday.
On Thursday, he provided an update to fans after completing his fifth procedure, stating he’s “stepping out of surgery with hope and resilience,” but aggressive bleeding was featured.
“I want to say how great I’m doing. But wow, the bleeding came back way aggressively in the middle of the night,” Kosar said from his hospital bed.
In July 2024, Kosar announced in a Cleveland Magazine story that he had been diagnosed
Kosar spent nine seasons with the Browns, who selected him with their first selection in the 1985 supplemental draft.
During his time in Cleveland Kosar earned one Pro Bowl nod, led the Browns to four playoff appearances and three AFC Championship berths, where they lost each time to the Denver Broncos.
In franchise history, the Youngstown native ranks third in passing yards (21,904), fourth in passing touchdowns (116) and third in games played by a quarterback (108).
