An uninsured drink-driver was caught after a pub popular with Newcastle United fans reported him to the police. Sean Blount had been a customer at The Strawberry, in the city centre, and was more than two times over the limit when he decided to get behind the wheel of his VW.
However, the 50-year-old was stopped by officers nearby after concerned workers at the pub had contacted them. Blount, of Frosterley Place, in Arthur's Hill, Newcastle, failed a roadside breath test, later giving a reading of 88mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath when the legal limit is 35mcg.
Blount has now been banned from the roads for 20 months after he pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol, driving without insurance and otherwise than in accordance with a licence. Jade Houston, prosecuting at Newcastle Magistrates' Court, said police were called on September 13 this year.

"The report came from staff at The Strawberry pub who said one of their customers had been drink-driving," Miss Houston continued. "Officers located the defendant and requested a breath test, which he failed."
The court heard that Blount had no previous convictions. Representing himself, Blount said: "I shouldn't have done it but I did."
Blount was also fined £120 and must pay £40 costs and a £48 victim surcharge.
