Former NBA guard Patrick Beverley has been arrested in Texas on a charge of felony assault.
Beverley, 37, was taken into custody by the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Department on Friday, Nov. 14, on a charge of assaulting a family or household member in a way that impedes breathing or circulation, according to court records viewed by PEOPLE. TMZ was first to report the news.
Beverley paid a $40,000 bond and was expected to be released from jail later in the day, the outlet reported.
PEOPLE was unable to reach a spokesperson for the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Department by phone.
In a post to his X account on Friday evening, Beverley seemed to address the arrest. "Please don’t believe everything you see on the internet. Hope all is well Luv," he wrote, pairing the message with a heart and praying hands emojis.
"Patrick Beverley has no criminal record. He cares deeply about his little sister – a young lady, a minor," Beverly's attorney, Letitia Quinones-Hollins, said in a statement to TMZ that was also posted on Beverly's X page. "Given that, when he unexpectedly found her alone in the home with an 18-year-old man in the middle of the night, he was understandably concerned, as any brother would be about his sister. However, we don’t believe what followed happened the way it’s been described and we look forward to the opportunity to address that in court."
Born in Illinois, Beverley was a star player at the University of Arkansas before playing professionally in Europe and the U.S. He was selected in the second round of the 2009 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers. He had stints with the Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia 76ers, Lakers and Chicago Bulls before joining the Milwaukee Bucks in 2024.
Beverley's time in the league was not without controversy. In 2024, he apologized after throwing a basketball at a fan in the stands as the Indiana Pacers eliminated the Bucks from the playoffs. The basketball reportedly hit the fan in the face, and Beverley was suspended for four games after the incident, according to NBC News.

Beverley also recently earned criticism from Dallas Mavericks player Klay Thompson, who clapped back at Beverley for making "disgusting" comments about his girlfriend, rapper Megan Thee Stallion.
On the Hoopin' and Hollerin' podcast, which Beverley co-hosts with his fellow former NBA star Jason Williams, both seemed to blame Megan for Thompson's recent lackluster performance on the court.
"I'm from West Virginia, man, I've been taught a lot from old folks, old white folks," Williams, 49, said, "It only takes one p--- to drag a battleship across the desert. That's how powerful it is."
He added, "Klay Thompson, I ain't sayin' that's what it is ... but that might be what it is."
Thompson responded to Beverley and Williams' "disturbing" comments in an Instagram post.
"Referring to my GF as a 'p***y' is so disgusting and disturbing,” he wrote. “Especially from someone who played in the NBA. How would yall feel if I referred to your wives in such a way? @patbev21.”
