Sonia Bompastor: 'I know how good Lexi Potter can be'

Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor wants to give further minutes to young midfielder Lexi Potter this season after the youngster impressed during the 4-0 win over St. Polten in the Women's Champions League.

Potter has featured twice as a substitute for Chelsea this term, including an impressive 35-minute cameo in Austria after replacing England international [Keira Walsh](/en/teams/profile/keira-walsh) in the 59th minute.

Winning the ball back on four occasions against St. Polten, Potter also completed 39 of her 41 passes, created two chances for her team-mates, and also threatened goal with two shots registered.

And Bompastor is keen to give the 19-year-old further first-team exposure in the weeks and months ahead.

'Lexi's a great young player, with a lot of talent,' said Bompastor. 'I think you could see that when she came in on the midweek game. I know how good she can be.

'The competition is really high in our Chelsea squad. So probably she doesn't get the minutes she would like to have, and she deserves to have from her quality.'

Potter signed a four-year contract extension with the Blues in the summer of 2024 and spent the previous two seasons on loan at Crystal Palace.

While many of Chelsea's talented young players head out on loan to gain more experience and time on the pitch, Bompastor is keen for the midfielder to remain with the first team for now.

'I really want her to stay with us for a certain part of the season,' the coach concluded. 'We need to find a way to give her more room, to make sure she gets more minutes, and she can prove herself on the pitch.'
