Real Madrid president will not step down before 2028 contrary to hearsay – report

A shocking set of rumours emerged in the Spanish capital on Friday claiming that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez was considering stepping down from his position next year despite his term only ending in 2028.

The reason given for the same was the president’s prioritisation of the club’s interest and how it would not be easy for any successor arriving to fill in his shoes.

Thus, it was claimed that Perez had decided to call it time at the end of this season so that the succession process could take place in an orderly manner, whether or not members supported the decision.

A contrary report

While initial news of Perez’s decision indeed left the Spanish capital in shock, Alberto Pereira has now come out to deny the news and clarify that there is no truth to the aforementioned claims.

As relayed by the Spanish journalist, Perez has no intention of leaving the club or stepping down before his current term ends in 2028.

In fact, he is expected to address the topic and clarify his stance on the same in the General Assembly on the 23rd of this month.

Further, Perez is even expected to accelerate matters on the discussion regarding Real Madrid’s socios model and thus prepone the meeting from 2026 to later this year.

The president remains one of the most influential figures in Real Madrid history and can be named the pioneer behind building the modern institution the club have come to stand for.

He first took charge of the club in 2000 and served until 2006, before returning in 2009 and serving to date. In recent elections, he has been relatively uncontested and has become synonymous with the club.

Already 78 age, however, it is clear that the end of his era at the club is just around the corner. The current presidency which ends in 2028, thus, may well be his final term at the club.
