The memories of excitement, attacking football and goals flying in remain vivid for fans from that time.
These days he watches from a prime position as his club again take on the elite, in the Premier League.
The club ambassador remains a sought-after figure on matchdays, based not just on results from the late 1970s but also the memory of that buzz.
When Albion were denied promotion on the final day of the 1978-79 season, he famously went up to the directors’ box and told fans the team would go up the following year.

Some of the shattered players can be seen here in the West Stand as they heard that prediction.
And go up they did – with a last-day win at Newcastle. Mullery, smartly attired as ever in shirt, tie and shades, could not contain his delight when the final whistle went.

Here, he runs towards Gerry Ryan and assistant boss Ken Craggs while Mark Lawrenson can also be seen in the background.
We also see a shot which is just pure 1970s as Mullery and club chairman Mike Bamber welcome Martin Chivers to the club.

It was a Spurs connection between Mullery and Chivers although the big frontman actually signed from Norwich City to join the successful promotion push in 1978-79.
He scored in only his second game with a majestic header at Orient before Ralph Coates rather unwantedly joined the Spurs reunion by scoring to give the home side a 3-3 draw.
Another shot which captures a different age is that of Mullery patrolling the touchline at the Goldstone with packed terraces of the West Stand going around into the North in the background.
This was in the final much of 1981-82 season as Albion beat Leeds to complete a remarkable escape from relegation.

That proved to be the final game of Mullery’s first stint at the Seagulls.

He returned relatively briefly in the second tier in 1986-87.
While this was not such a happy time, there was still the occasional lighter moment such as when he wheeled in Gerry Armstrong, along with fellow new signing Dale Jasper. Les Berry was the other addition that summer.
