Coventry City better off than Leeds United as ‘one of ballsiest’ changes pays dividends for…

Coventry City are only a third of the way into the new Championship season but the club is already being tipped for an automatic promotion spot.

Sitting at top of the league for the last six weeks, the Sky Blues are leading the pack with 34 points – five clear of second placed Middlesbrough and seven away from third placed Stoke.

And it’s interesting to look at how that tally compares to this time last year, and in particular the teams that dominated the chase for automatic promotion – Leeds United and Burnley.

Ali Maxwell from Not The Top 20 pod said: “ Coventry have five points more than Leeds at this stage last season, seven points more than Burnley had at this stage last season. Both of those teams, you may remember, got 100 points in the end.

“Also it’s double the points that Coventry had at this stage of last season, when they went on to make the play-offs.

“It has been an unbelievable start and Doug King will have enjoyed this for a number of reasons. A year on from one of the ballsiest managerial changes of all time and you have to wonder how many times really, really, really ballsy manager changes have paid off in football.

“It wasn’t just the sacking of Coventry legend Robins but the fact that it was Lampard he turned to. People wondered if he’d been wowed by the celebrity and playing career of Lampard but what can you say right now with how good this Coventry side are and how much of a grip Lampard has on them?

“For Robins himself, it’s only a year since he lost that job and his reputation hasn’t taken the slightest dent. He’s got Stoke City in third place and they are a team that had been underachieving and under performing for the best part of a decade. Wow.”
