Sneaker free agent Steph Curry paid homage to the late Kobe Bryant and Gigi Bryant by rocking the “Mambacita” Nike Kobe 6 during his pregame routine on Friday. After helping the Golden State Warriors to a 109-108 win over the San Antonio Spurs, Curry was asked why he chose the specific sneaker.
“New beginnings,” Curry said in a two-word response to the question.
Curry further explained why he chose Kobe 6, a sneaker that represents Gigi Bryant just as much as “The Black Mamba” and late Los Angeles Lakers icon.
“The idea of what he meant,” Curry said of his sneaker choice.
“I talk about Kobe a lot, and that specific pair, I think it speaks for itself for what it means.”

Steph Curry Proud of Under Armour Stint
Even though he ended his 12-year tenure with Under Armour, Steph Curry reflected positively on his time with the sneaker brand that he essentially put on the map.
“I was blessed to have an unbelievable experience to take a chance on something that meant a lot to me over the last 13 years,” Curry said of his Under Armour experience.
“I’m extremely proud of what myself, my team and everybody who touched that business — we all should be proud of what we accomplished. We took a basketball category or brand that wasn’t a thing before to where we did.
“Now, I’m excited about the future,” he added.
When asked why he ended the Under Armour partnership, Curry said the changing landscape of the sneaker industry left him with no other choice.
“It was just in the best interest of both parties,” Curry said, via Mercury News.
“You know, the sneaker industry is difficult, and like I said, things change over time. You give your best effort to create something sustainable, and it’s a little disappointing, knowing how it turned out based on where Curry Brand has been the last five years, and the announcement we had two years ago. I think its the right thing for everybody, and for me to be able to take the opportunity with Curry Brand, and what we’ve done in the community, what we’ve done from Standing for something, changing the game for good, and hopefully having something to show for it down the road, I’m excited about that.”
Vanessa Bryant Reacts
Meanwhile, Vanessa Bryant, the widow of Kobe Bryant, reacted to Steph Curry’s sneaker choice with an🙏🏽 emoji on her Instagram Stories.
Curry could potentially rock sneakers of other stars in the coming days as he prepares for his next shoe deal. His teammate, Draymond Green, suspects Curry could be on the verge of creating his own brand, much like Michael Jordan did with Nike.
