A return to Ajax in January is ‘not out of the question’ for Brighton and Hove Albion defender Joël Veltman.
That’s according to Voetbal Primeur. They present Veltman as a realistic option for the Dutch club in the January transfer window.
They explain that Veltman isn’t out of the question for Ajax, thanks to his contract situation. His current deal expires next summer, but Brighton ‘aren’t averse’ to him leaving before then.
They can still make money for him in the January transfer window. If they don’t, he can walk away for free in the summer transfer window.
Ajax should be interested because he can play at right-back, centre-back and even as a defensive midfielder if necessary. That would allow Ajax to strengthen several positions at once.
Veltman also knows Ajax through and through. He made 246 appearances for the club earlier in his career. That means he knows the system, the culture and the style of play ‘inside and out’.
There are questions about his speed and physical dominance but the fact he’s still playing in the Premier League with Brighton should mean Ajax think the risk is worth it. Furthermore, Veltman recently admitted he would consider a return to his former club.
Ajax need to come up with a ‘convincing case’ for him. But there is a belief there’s a deal for the Brighton man if they want it.
