Matchday Memories: On This Day 1975 – Mortimer Magic As Milne’s Men Mug Canaries

ImageOn this day (15th November) in 1975 current CCFPA member Dennis Mortimer scored the only goal of the game in the eighteenth minute as the Sky Blues, managed by fellow CCFPA member Gordon Milne, beat Norwich City. There were 14,906 fans at Highfield Road braving the exceedingly wet conditions hoping for CCFC’s first home victory in six games since two promising opening wins against Everton (4-1) and Manchester City (2-0) way back in August. Dennis has quite often returned to see the Sky Blues home games with us as Association’s ‘special guest’.

The Norfolk team were the team to play if two home points were required as CCFC had scored fifteen straight wins at Highfield Road against the Canaries over playing seasons stretching back to 1937! The Sky Blues duly got their sixteenth home win on the bounce against the Canaries but deserved more than the left footer scored by Dennis in the Highfield Road quagmire.

The result remained in doubt until the end with the Canaries duo of Phil Boyer and Scottish hard man defender Duncan Forbes both going close for the away team and City’s Donal Murphy also just missing out from getting his name on the score-sheet.

City went on to do the double over the Canaries winning 3-0 at Carrow Road, Norwich the following February with goals by Mick Ferguson, the late John Craven and David Cross. However, by the end of the 1975-76 season the East Anglian team finished tenth in Division One four places higher than the Sky Blues (fourteenth).

Liverpool took the title by a point from Queen’s Park Rangers whilst, at the other end of the Division One table, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Burnley and bottom side Sheffield United suffered the drop.
