Sunderland player believes teammate needs more minutes with Black Cats

Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs says Brian Brobbey will be unhappy with his current situation at the Stadium of Light.

Soccer News cover the 22-year-old stopper’s comments about the striker’s limited role at Sunderland. Brobbey left Ajax to join Sunderland on a permanent transfer on summer deadline day.

A month ago, they signed Roefs from NEC Nijmegen, and he has been the No.1 for Régis Le Bris. His impressive performances for the Premier League side helped him receive his first call-up from the Netherlands in August.

Roefs is yet to make his senior debut, but Ronald Koeman has called him up in October and for the ongoing international break.

Brobbey, on the other hand, has lost his place in the national team and his situation with the Black Cats hasn’t helped him either. The 23-year-old is yet to start for Sunderland and has a goal and assist from six matches. He scored a late equaliser against Arsenal last weekend.

The goalkeeper was asked whether his compatriot is struggling at Sunderland. When responding to that, Roefs explained what the striker must do to return to the national team squad.

“You really have to ask him. But of course, he’ll be disappointed. I know he wants to be here, and he has the qualities to do so,” he said.

“It’s important for him now that he gets playing time. If he plays, it can only help him in his national team. Everyone ultimately wants to play for the Dutch national team. He’s no exception.”

Last month, former Ajax manager John van ‘t Schip raised concerns over the frontman’s physicality. His decision to join Sunderland was also questioned by the Dutch media.

The tone has changed since he scored against Arsenal. He’ll have to regularly impress for Sunderland to return to the Netherlands squad.
