The post-Ireland-match clash involving Manchester City players Bernardo Silva and Rúben Dias and travelling fans continues to generate strong reaction in Portugal.
Journalist Nuno Farinha addressed the incident on CNN Maisfutebol and openly criticised both players for the way they confronted a group of Portuguese supporters after the defeat to Ireland.
Farinha said the behaviour was unacceptable. He argued that two players with long Premier League experience should remain calm, even when emotions run high.
According to him, they have heard far worse in stadiums and know how to deal with hostile reactions. He insisted: “They must ignore that and thank the fans who applauded,” stressing that many supporters reacted positively despite the loss.
He also highlighted the responsibility both players carry. Farinha noted that Bernardo Silva and Rúben Dias are not fringe figures. They are senior internationals with leadership roles for both club and country.

In his view, that makes their reaction even more damaging. The analyst focused especially on the Manchester City defender, saying his gesture looked confrontational and resembled a threat. The panel agreed that captains cannot show that type of response.
The debate also touched on leadership issues inside the squad. Farinha pointed out that Ronaldo’s expulsion removed the group’s main reference and left the team exposed in many ways.
Others suggested that frustration had built up throughout the match, contributing to the confrontation after the final whistle.
Portugal still control their qualification path, but the episode with the Manchester City pair added pressure and intensified scrutiny.
