Nicolas Dominguez is expected to be handed a Nottingham Forest exit route with transfer interest back in Argentina.
The versatile 27-year-old midfielder ended last season as a key figure under Nuno Espirito Santo but his start to this term was derailed by a knee injury that also scuppered his return to the Argentina squad.
He had only made one start and one sub appearance before he was picked by Sean Dyche on the left for a 3-1 home win over Leeds United last weekend, coming through 59 minutes of action.
His squad status has pricked the attention of River Plate, who are preparing for what the local press are describing as a major close-season squad overhaul next month. At least eight departures are expected and a box-to-box midfielder is near the top of their priorities in terms of incomings.
South America transfer specialist Germán García Grova said: "(Manager, Marcelo) Gallardo already wanted this player. They sounded him out to play for the Italian national team, but he ended up with the Argentine national team. We're talking about Nico Domínguez, a player for Nottingham Forest in England. He hasn't been playing much lately, only three games so far this season."
El Intransigente add: "River Plate has been tracking Nico Domínguez for some time but given his age and situation in the Premier League, a move seemed impossible. Now that he's seeing very little playing time, the possibility of the 27-year-old midfielder seeking a change of scenery is not out of the question, and that's where River Plate comes in.
"Even if the player gives his approval, it won't be a simple operation, as Nottingham Forest recently paid over €10 million for him and will now be looking to recoup some of their investment."
