Rob Edwards decision to leave Middlesbrough for Wolves has caused a stir in the media
Edwards has swapped a promotion push with Championship side Middlesbrough for a challenging battle to keep Wolves eight-season status in the Premier League intact.
The Telford-born coach, who formerly played and coached at Wolves, had only agreed to join Middlesbrough in June, following a difficult end to life at Luton Town last season.
He’d started the season in excellent fashion at Boro after succeeding Michael Carrick but was criticised for jumping ship at the first opportunity after being handed an opportunity by chairman Steve Gibson. However, Edwards responded to criticism by admitting it was one of the toughest decisions he had ever made in his career.
What Rob Edwards said after joining Wolves
Rob Edwards shared a heartfelt message to Middlesbrough supporters thanking them for their support over the last five months.
He said on Instagram: “This has been one of the toughest decisions of my career. In truth, I wouldn't have considered leaving Middlesbrough for any other club.
“Wolves is a special club for me. It's where I grew as both a player and a coach, it's still where my family calls home. It has always been my dream to come back and these opportunities do not come around too often.
“Middlesbrough is an incredible club, with a fantastic owner, staff and passionate supporters. I want to thank everyone at the club for the opportunity to lead this squad, it is a great group of players that I genuinely hope and believe will deliver success this season.
“I could not be prouder of the environment we built together and how it all gelled together so quickly – the players, the staff, and the fans, who drive it all.I sincerely wish everyone at Middlesbrough all the very best for the rest of the season and beyond.”
Simon Jordan slams Rob Edwards after Middlesbrough farewell
Simon Jordan has been a vocal critic of Rob Edwards following his decision to swap Teesside for the West Midlands. He even went as far as to say that he hopes Edwards and Wolves are relegated at the end of the season for the way things have panned out.
"Of course he would leave for another football club, if Man United phoned him up and asked if he wanted the job, he wouldn't say 'I can't join you because I'd only go to Wolves', what rubbish. Look, he's moved on, and like most things in sport, people have short memories, so we'll see how he gets on.
"Often in life, people lacking integrity prosper, so maybe Wolves will stay up. It's a fantastic sight to behold because it's based upon what, relegating Luton from the Premier League and the Championship?" Jordan asked.
"That gives you the idea that he's worth a three-and-a-half year contract? If he's not successful and Wolves go down this season, and they start next season poorly, would you like to place a bet that Rob Edwards will still be in his job?”
Jordan went on to criticize Edwards for his comments where he referred to Middlesbrough as a family unit while claiming he only wanted people that were committed to that football club.
"What happened to all that then? It was a pack of lies. But it's not a pack of lies because the only job in football that he would take came up. So if a big job like Aston Villa or Man United came up, he would say no because 'the only job I want is Wolves', it's rubbish.
“What it negates is the argument that I'm making and negates any curiosity about the lack of integrity, the lack of honesty, the lack of substance. It's the rules of engagement, it's the rules of the jungle, but it shouldn't be."
