After Patrick Bamford, journalist says another Leeds United hero is now set to sign for a Yorkshire rival

Patrick Bamford caused a stir at Leeds United earlier this week after teaming up with Chris Wilder at Sheffield United.

It was one of the most surprising deals in recent times when all details are considered, with the England international taunting Wilder at the end of last season, having also previously been called a “muppet” by the 58-year-old.

Patrick Bamford is now set to be joined in Sheffield by Liam Cooper as the Leeds icon nears a move to Hillsborough.

Liam Cooper set to join Sheffield Wednesday

After the Owls were liberated from Dejphon Chansiri – whose mismanagement put Sheffield Wednesday under a transfer embargo – the Championship outfit are now able to add new players to their squad again as debts are paid off.

According to respected journalist Andy Giddings, Cooper is likely to become the first new arrival.

He wrote on X (previously known as Twitter): “Sheffield Wednesday update. Per sources, expecting defender Liam Cooper to be the first of the arrivals ‘early next week’ now that the Owls have been granted permission to add to the squad by the EFL.”

The man who made 284 appearances for Leeds has been without a club since leaving CSKA Sofia back in July – less than 12 months into his contract with the Bulgarian outfit – so he might require some time to rebuild his match fitness.

Nevertheless, with 207 Championship appearances to his name, the 34-year-old will surely be able to help behind the scenes even without kicking a ball.

When will Patrick Bamford and Liam Cooper face each other?

Leeds fans will have a vested interest in the Steel City derby next Sunday, as it could see Bamford go directly up against Cooper.

Due to the aforementioned point on his lack of game time, Cooper might not be ready to play – however – so Leeds fans should also be sure to keep an eye on the 22nd February when the Owls travel to Bramall Lane for the reverse fixture.
