Rob Edwards is taking on the seismic task of trying to save Wolves from relegation
The Portuguese coach has proven it’s possible to lift the club out of danger. He did it last season after replacing Gary O’Neil at a challenging phase of the campaign. However, it’s fair to say that Edwards faces a much tougher task than any previous manager, and will need to have an almost seismic impact on the confidence of the players to lift them out of the position they are currently in.
The January transfer window has the potential to offer the club some respite, although they’ve had a difficult time in the market in recent years, but for the time being the key for Edwards will be working with the tools he has at his disposal.
The Telford-born head coach has time on his side after joining before the November international break to try and figure out what’s going wrong at the moment. But implementing change is another task entirely. But who can Edwards rely on based on their early season form for Wolves - and who does he potentially need to drop from the lineup ahead of his first match against Crystal Palace? Here we take a look at the WhoScored player ratings to find out.
Who are Wolves’ best three performing players this season?
Based on the data, Santiago Bueno is the top performer in Wolves squad with an average match rating of 6.8 over the course of the campaign. He’s the only player in the team that’s received a Man of the Match award and he’s also chipped in with a goal from defence while winning 2.9 tackles on average per game.
His namesake, Hugo Bueno at left-back takes second spot with a rating of 6.7. The Portuguese hasn’t registered a goal contribution but has shown a willingness to get forward and try and make things happen with an average of 1.3 key passes per match - the highest in the Wolves team.
Ladislav Krejcí, a summer signing that’s played centre-back and central midfield on occasion, makes the podium with a rating of 6.67. He has one goal and one assist so far this term.
Who are Wolves’ worst performing trio this season?
Focusing solely on players that have had at least 90 minutes to make an impression, Jose Sa is the lowest rated player this term. The Portuguese footballer, who was once hugely reliable in between the posts, has seen his form fall off a cliff this season. He’s got an overall rating of 5.76 after conceding 15 times in five appearances across all competitions.
Yerson Mosquera has a rating of 5.97, leaving him with plenty of work to do if he’s to establish himself as a regular starter this term. He was involved during Vitor Pereira’s last match against Fulham and struggled to get to grips with the attacking players in Marco Silva’s side.
Toti Gomes, the skipper, also has plenty of work to do to turn his season around. The Portuguese defender has a rating of 6.09 which has seen him get dropped from the lineup on several occasions.
