Nick Woltemade bagged a well-taken brace for Germany against Luxembourg last night.

Newcastle United star Nick Woltemade bagged a prolific double for Germany against Luxembourg last night.

A ruthless brace saw him bag with either foot to further stake his claim for Julian Nagelsmann’s senior setup. And if there were any negatives from a Newcastle perspective, his two strikes came from service he has not seen at St James’ Park this season.

Woltemade has been fed on scraps and, to his credit, is doing well to have six strikes across all competitions this season. The 23-year-old’s catalogue so far includes impoverished backheel finishes, a couple of headers and a brilliant top-corner penalty.

Rarely have the Magpies seen Woltemade bear down on goal against the goalkeeper or tap home from inside the six-yard box. For his first goal, Leroy Sane’s cross allowed him to fire a one-touch, left-footed strike home.

Newcastle United food for thought

Riddle Baku then set him up on his favoured foot to double Germany’s advantage. Another first-time finish gave Newcastle tactical food for thought ahead of the Manchester City clash next weekend. Watch the Toon favourite’s double via a user on X below.

Woltemade with 2 classic ‘number 9’ goals tonight for Germany. That’s 9 goals this season 🔥

All it takes is a midfield who can actually keep the ball and a winger who can put a decent cross in! Now it’s on NUFC to give him the service he deserves… pic.twitter.com/6CkOaL9gEV

Woltemade will undoubtedly start up front, with Yoane Wissa not yet fit from his knee injury. Even if he were, it is unlikely the Magpies would throw the 29-year-old into the deep end, having not kicked a ball since May.

Nick Woltemade on Germany win

Speaking after the 2-0 victory, the match-winner said: “The way we played in the first half wasn’t good. Too little intensity, little pressure, little joy in our play. We were able to change that in the second half, scoring goals at the important moments, and that’s what matters in the end.

“It wasn’t a feast for the eyes, but I don’t really care about that right now - the most important thing is that we win games like this. We could have won the game by a bigger margin if we had finished our chances better.

“But we’ll take the victory and look forward to the next match. As I said, the game was hard work, but that’s part of it sometimes, and then it’s important to take your chances - which we did today.”

Eddie Howe sets Nick Woltemade challenge

Eddie Howe has challenged Woltemade to maintain consistency throughout the Premier League season. He told reporters: “We're really pleased with Nick - really happy with him. On and off the pitch, he's been first class. The way he's conducted himself, handled the move, the way he's embraced his teammates.

"His team ethics are excellent. He's got an ability to score goals, to be in the right position. Technically, he's very good. We still have to bring out more in his game and help him in every way we can - the early signs are very positive.

"He's got variety in his game. I don't think he's one-dimensional. His height, but then you add in his technical ability - I think that can be a surprise for opponents. His challenge is consistency and long-term success. Teams will obviously work out plans for him, as we do for all our opponents, and he's got to continue to find a way to score goals."
