Following the departure of Jurgen Klopp, many might have expected Liverpool to have a slight slump as they got used to life under his successor Arne Slot. But the Dutchman emphatically silenced any doubters as the Reds steamrolled their way to the title in his debut year at the helm.
The Merseyside club wrapped up the Premier League on the 27th April, beating Tottenham 5-1 to clinch silverware. And, unsurprisingly, the foot came off the gas as they cruised to the end of the season.
But it seems as though the Reds haven't put their foot back on the throttle since English football resumed in August. Despite bringing Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak and several others into the squad, Liverpool needed several late goals to pick up wins early in the season and have since gone on to lose five of their last six matches.
Although Slot retains the backing of the club, he is coming under increasing pressure to turn their fortunes around. And you can understand why when you see what the division would look like if it only factored in results since Liverpool won the Premier League in 2024/25.

Southampton and Ipswich Town both sit at the foot of the table, with each team only playing an additional four times before their eventual relegation. But, although they have played significantly more games than each Championship side, Wolverhampton Wanderers are just two points above in 21st, a damning indictment of their dismal start to the 2025/26 season.
The Old Gold trail behind the final team who were relegated in 2024/25, Leicester City, who picked up two wins and a draw before they fell into England's second tier last term. Then come two newly promoted sides, Burnley and Leeds United, who have both given good accounts of themselves since the league season began.
Nottingham Forest were one of the stories of 2024/25, going from relegation candidates to Champions League hopefuls thanks to heroic efforts from their squad and then-manager Nuno Espirito Santo. But the bubble burst at the end of the term as they tumbled down the table, eventually finishing seventh. That form has spilled into the new year too, with the Tricky Trees replacing their manager twice and floundering in the relegation zone.

Fulham are tied with Forest on points since April 2025, and have even lost one more game than the team that sit below them. Marco Silva's side are ahead only on goal difference, but the Cottagers definitely have room for improvement, collecting just 11 points in the new season. The same point can be made for Newcastle United who, despite qualifying for the Champions League this term, have just 16 points in their last 15 games.
The Magpies have won just four of those league fixtures, with Eddie Howe coming under pressure after losses to Brentford and West Ham. Indeed, it's the Hammers who are one point ahead in this fictional league table, despite their terrible start to 2025/26 under Graham Potter. New manager Nuno Espirito Santo looks to have turned a page at the London Stadium, winning two consecutive matches.
Tottenham Hotspur effectively sacrificed their efforts in the league to put all their eggs in the Europa League basket, a gamble which ultimately paid off. Their five wins since April have all come following Thomas Frank's arrival in the dugout this summer. But even though they've improved this term, they still trail behind Sunderland here, who have made an incredible start following their promotion. It's a testament to the work Regis Le Bris is doing at the Stadium of Light that the Black Cats are ahead of multiple teams here who have all played more matches.
The big story, though, is Liverpool's lowly position of 11th. While Slot's team might well have taken their eye off the ball after they wrapped up the Premier League in 2024/25, it's no excuse for their poor start to the new term. Since their victory against Tottenham last year, they've lost more matches than they have won, which is a far cry from the dominance they showed on their way to silverware.

Manchester United sit just ahead of Liverpool in the real Premier League table on goal difference, and are ahead of them by a point here too. Since Ruben Amorim took over, the Red Devils have struggled for consistency, as illustrated by the league table since his appointment - but they've recently found form, winning three and drawing two of their last five matches, which make up for over half their points since April 2025.
Bournemouth and Crystal Palace are two teams who have consistently punched above their weight, as illustrated by the Cherries' ninth-placed finish last term and the latter's FA Cup triumph against Manchester City. The two sides find themselves ninth and seventh here, separated only by Everton, who have made a marked improvement since David Moyes returned to the club.
Brentford only scraped into the top half last term, but, despite losing Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa this summer, have continued to find a way to pick up points under Keith Andrews. They are tied with Brighton for points since the 27th April, with the Seagulls among the top five when it comes to overall form since then.

Aston Villa might well have qualified for the Champions League last term after a late surge in form, were it not for a disallowed goal in their final match against Manchester United. And although they made a slow start to the new season, Unai Emery's side have picked up pace, collecting 27 points in their last 15 games.
Even after their strong end to 2024/25 and their Club World Cup success in the summer, Enzo Maresca's Chelsea still don't look completely convincing. Nevertheless, nine wins in their last 15 makes for impressive reading, even if a few VAR calls have helped them on their way.
The top two are separated by just one point, but it's Arsenal who just have an edge on Manchester City by a single point. Both teams have won the same number of games since Liverpool won the league, but the Gunners have drawn three and lost one while their title rivals have drawn one and lost three.
It certainly bodes well for Mikel Arteta's side, who are looking to win a first league title in over 20 years. And while City might push them all the way, Liverpool really need to turn their form around if they are to have a say in the matter.
