Scot Gemmill made a number of changes to the team from Baku with Dunfermline Athletic’s Andrew Tod and Falkirk’s Connor Allan coming in for debuts at Under-21 level. Allan was joined by Sam Cleall-Harding, Colby Donovan and Ben McPherson in the back-line, in front of Ruaridh Adams. Tod was joined in midfield by Kyle Ure and captain David Watson, with a frontline featuring Ryan Oné, Emilio Lawrence and James Wilson.
**As It Happened**
Scotland started the game on the front foot against the hosts, probing down either flank and James Wilson dropping off the front line to give space in behind. Emilio Lawrence fired the first shot on target of the evening after just 4 minutes.
The Scots briefly thought they’d taken the leader after just 8 minutes, as Andy Tod almost made a dream start to his Under-21 career, nodding home from a David Watson corner, only for a foul to be blown for a foul elsewhere in the box.
David Watson was next to have a chance, as unconvincing defending from the hosts saw the ball drop for the Scotland captain on the edge of the box, but he could only find the stand with his strike.
The visitors grabbed the lead on the 19th minute after some great work by Tod, and a slick pass from Ure found James Wilson running in behind the Gibraltar back-line to slot it coolly into the bottom corner.
Wilson almost made it two on the 25th minute as a slack Gibraltar pass found the Scotland front-man, who made a yard for himself on the edge of the 18-yard box, only to find his shot tipped over by Harry Victor in the Gibraltar goal.
As the rain tumbled down David Watson once again picked the pocket of a Gibraltar defender and found James Wilson, with his shot flying agonisingly past the post.
As the half drew to a close, Kyle Ure whipped a ball to the back post, which Andy Tod cushioned down expertly on his chest to Emilio Lawrence, with his strike once again saved by Victor.
Scotland kicked off the second half with the sides unchanged. Just five minutes in to the second-half saw a blow for Scotland as right-back Colby Donovan succumbed to injury and was stretchered off, to be replaced by another debutant, as Aberdeen’s Dylan Lobban came on.
Scotland came close again 59 minutes in as Ure popped up on the edge of the box, whipping a cross just beyond the despairing Andy Tod at the back post.
Taylor Steven entered as a second-half substitute and made a busy start to his Scotland Under-21 career, providing a fantastic cross for James Wilson at the back-post, but the Hearts man nodded just over the bar. It was Andy Tod next to have a strike, stepping in from the left-hand side to curl one for the corner, as Victor once again tipped it wide.
Scotland continued to battle in the challenging conditions, with Ure, Steven and Tod taking chances to fire toward the Gibraltar goal.
Scotland finally made the breakthrough for the second as Tod and Steven combined down the left-hand side, with Steven’s cross deceiving everyone to nestle into the corner of the net as he grabbed a goal on his Scotland Debut.
Scotland saw out the remainder of the game with Ryan Carr and Barney Stewart making their debuts as late substitutes in the final stages of the game.
Scotland move up to third in the group, and can look forward to Bulgaria at Fir Park on Tuesday.
