Patriots place defensive leader on Ir, sign Lb to active roster

Confirming reports earlier in the day that Milton Williams would be out multiple weeks, the Patriots put the defensive tackle on injured reserve with a high ankle sprain.

According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, Williams will miss 4-6 weeks. He’ll have to miss at least five weeks. NFL rules require a four-game stay on IR and the Patriots’ bye week is on Dec. 7.

New England added linebacker Bradyn Swinson to the 53-man roster to fill Williams’ roster spot.

Williams, whom the Patriots signed as a free agent from the Philadelphia Eagles during the offseason, has started all 11 games this season. He has 17 tackles and 3½ sacks.

Swinson was the Patriots’ fifth-round draft pick in 2025, whom they signed to the practice squad after he didn’t make the team out of training camp.

Williams appeared to turn his ankle when he stepped on teammate Christian Barmore on the sixth play of the Jets’ opening drive. He returned in the second quarter and tried to play before Mike Vrabel shut him down.

Williams will have to miss the next four games:

Nov. 23 at Cincinnati

Dec. 1 vs NY Giants

Dec. 7 -Bye

Dec 14 —vs Buffalo

Dec 21 —at Baltimore
