On the heels of two heartbreaking losses to the Golden State Warriors, the Spurs have an excellent opportunity to right the ship against the Sacramento Kings on Sunday. While this matchup is incredibly enticing for the Spurs, it is even sweeter for De'Aaron Fox. The former Kings guard will be taking on his previous team for just the second time since his departure.
As the Kings sit at a lowly 3-10, the Spurs will look to capitalize on the ease of the matchup for a much-needed victory. While the Kings currently sit towards the bottom, they have beaten the Spurs in five out of their last seven matchups, many of which included De'Aaron Fox. Now, the hasty guard will look to turn the tables in favor of the Spurs.
De'Aaron Fox needs amensia heading into a bittersweet matchup
Playing in his fourth game of the season following an offseason hamstring injury, De'Aaron Fox brutally struggled to close out against the Warriors. Although he played a solid match for the majority of it, his late-game lapses ultimately led to a Spurs loss.
Struggling to get in a groove, the shooter missed three straight shots to conclude the game and delivered a brutal foul on Steph Curry to seal the deal. However, as the professional that he is, Fox must put the past behind him and look forward to crushing his former team.
All eyes will be on the point guard in this Western Conference battle. The former All-Star can rub salt in the wound of the Kings for how they treated him during his tenure. Fox has everything to play for in this game, and we expect him to take full advantage. Don't be surprised if De'Aaron heats up for a forty bomb.
Victor Wembanyama is hoping for a statement game
To begin the season, Victor Wembanyama was looking like the most godly basketball-playing creature we have ever seen. However, lately, it hasn't exactly been the same. The Alien has struggled to deal with extra bodies and has allowed smaller players to cause him difficulties.
Don't get me wrong, he has still been great, but we would love to see another explosive outing. The Sacramento Kings offer the chance for this to happen. Playing against the Kings' 25th-ranked defense, Wembanyama should absolutely dominate. That all depends on whether he plays after showing up on the injury report as questionable, but we'll act like he'll be in the lineup.
The Frenchman has been picking up his bad habit from last year in recent games, as he has elected to take more pull-up jumpers than drives to the rim. This was the big man's most pressing issue in past years, and it appears it hasn't fully been resolved. Wembanyama can't let Domantas Sabonis or any of the other Kings players scare him; put your head down and show them who's boss.
The Silver and Black need to bring the energy on both sides of the ball and return to playing the way they did before the Golden State disaster. Expect the Spurs to come out angry in this one and fired up to secure a much-needed victory.
