The Golden State Warriors are leaving San Antonio with two wins and one of the funniest soundbites of the season. Stephen Curry capped off another monster outing by comparing himself to Paramore lead singer Hayley Williams, delivering a perfect punchline to a week where he looked every bit like the NBA’s main attraction.
Curry followed up Wednesday’s 46-point eruption with 49 points in Friday’s 109 to 108 win over the San Antonio Spurs, hitting 9 of 17 from three and knocking down the game-winning free throws with less than a second remaining. It was his most efficient performance of the season, and it came on a night where Golden State needed every bucket to complete a late comeback.
After the game, Curry was asked about Steve Kerr’s pregame message. The Warriors coach told the team he views winning like performing in a rock band. Everyone has a role. Everyone has a part to play.
When Curry was asked which role he filled on Friday night, he dodged at first. A moment later, he delivered the line that went viral.
“I was Hayley Williams in Paramore tonight,” he said in a postgame interview shared by the NBA.
It was a quick, sharp answer that fit the tone of the night and captured exactly how in control he was.
Warriors Star Leads the Show in San Antonio
Curry’s performance felt like a headliner taking over the stage. He finished 16 of 26 from the field. Along the way, he added four rebounds, two assists, and two steals. The Warriors leaned on him heavily as they erased a 10 point deficit.
Golden State outscored San Antonio 24 to 13 in the final 6:42. During that stretch, Curry delivered another avalanche of shotmaking. Thirty one of his points came in the second half, including 14 straight to close the third quarter and a late burst that flipped the momentum.
Even Victor Wembanyama could not slow him down. The Spurs superstar big man was incredible again, posting 26 points, 12 rebounds, and 3 blocks, but Curry’s shotmaking warped the game in ways few players can.
Golden State needed the outburst too. Outside of Curry, only Jimmy Butler reached double figures with 21 points. The rest of the Warriors shot 22 of 64, and scoring felt like a grind until Curry detonated.
When everything broke down, he became the show.
Warriors Icon Leans Into the Paramore Comparison
Curry’s Hayley Williams line wasn’t pulled from thin air. In 2018, he famously joined Williams on stage during a Paramore show to help perform “Misery Business”, a moment captured in a clip shared by Live105 that resurfaced shortly after his postgame quote.
Curry’s comparison was not about elevating himself. It came from a place of humor and self-awareness, recognizing that some nights require him to step into the spotlight. And Friday was one of those nights.
Kerr’s rock-band analogy set the tone for the evening, but Curry provided the encore. The connection makes sense. Stage presence. Timing. Energy. The ability to command a crowd and deliver when it matters most.
Curry nailed the comparison.
Where Golden State Go From Here
The Warriors improved to 8–6 and moved to 1–1 in their NBA Cup group. Even with the win, the team knows they cannot lean on Curry to score 45-plus every night. The bench generated only 12 points before two late threes from Gary Payton II, and the inconsistent scoring around Curry remains a storyline.
But for the second straight game, their superstar delivered a performance that made everything else fade into the background. He hit the biggest shots, created the momentum swings, and turned AT&T Center into his personal stage.
Just like a frontman would.
Next up for the Warriors is a matchup against the New Orleans Pelicans, where Golden State will look to build on their two-game streak. Whether Curry channels Hayley Williams again remains to be seen, but if the last week proved anything, he is still one of the best performers in the league.
